School Profile
Fuzhou No. 3 High School is one of the most effective high schools in China; competitive
with Bejing No. 4 and the Ranmin Affiliated High Schools. It has been
designated a Municipal Key High School and a Provincial Key School since
2003. It provides comprehensive education to about 2000 students from Senior One to Senior Three (US grades ten to twelve).
The Edison International Program (EIP)
The school offers the standard high school curriculum as designed and approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It also offers participation in its Edison International Program. The Edison International Program (EIP) offers English based instruction, preparing students to attend overseas universities.
University Acceptance
Each
year, over 50% of graduates qualify to attend top tier Chinese colleges
and universities, with over 90% qualifying for second tier
institutions. In 2008, students from Fuzhou No. 3 School comprised 42%
(16 of 38) students from Fuzhou admitted to China's highest-ranked
universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, and
Zhejiang University. Graduates of the English based EIP have shown comparable success with international universities. Some examples of these universities are shown as below:

Curriculum
The
majority of students will complete the standard required courses in
preparation for the National College Entrance Examination (the Gao Kao)
at the end of Senior Three. Students enrolled in the EIP will earn all compulsory credits in the first two years, studying
Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus), Economics, English, Chinese Language, History, Chinese Politics, Technology of Information and Geography. Students may also choose elective courses that include the fine arts: Music, Dance, Painting, etc. Since Sep. 2011, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus) and Economics for EIP students have all been taught using the A-level course system.
Most EIP Senior Three students do not sit the National College Entrance Examination, as they intend to study outside of China. Some of these courses – particularly Chinese Language, History, Chinese Politics, Information Technology and Geography – are taught by teachers of the standard
curriculum, whereas the others are taught by teachers affiliated with
the English-based EIP. In this way, internationally bound students
benefit from the increased use and normalization of English as a class
medium.
In Senior Three, students enrolled in EIP study Advanced Placement Calculus, and either AP Economics or AP Physics (Most EIP Senior 3 students do not sit for the National College Entrance Examination, as they intend to study outside of China). AP courses are also taught exclusively in English with English-language textbooks (Note:
Current Senior 3 students who got their school registration in Sep.
2010 did not study A-Level courses as authorization for A-Level study
was only granted in 2011). However from 2011 onwards, Senior 3
students in the EIP can select either AP or A2. If they select A2
courses they can complete the whole A-Level in a subject.
Current AP Results:
AP
assessment is based on the 1 to 5 points scale and exams are held in
May worldwide; the following diagram shows that the majority of EIP
students achieve 4 or 5 giving them the required transfer credit to skip
the foundation course in these subjects in their first university
academic year.
Current A-level Final-Exam Results
Grading
for each subject is reported via transcript, and follows the A-Level
assessment criteria based on the A-F scale and is also calculated into
GPA. Grades are issued at the end of each semester. Due
to the mobility and international backgrounds of the student body as
well as the EIP class sizes, EIP does not provide class rankings. The
graph to the left shows 16% of our students achieved an A grade and the
majority achieving B’s and C’s.
Results
of worldwide A-level examination for EIP students will come out in Feb.
2013; students so far have only taken AS because A2 is only taught in
the 2nd year of high school, hence only the current EIP senior 2 students have taken the worldwide exam so far.
